2XX is one of the most significant local community broadcasting services in Canberra and the surrounding region (as opposed to Radio National who aren’t local but broadcast here). We are dedicated and committed to building and supporting community participation based on common interests, neighbourhoods, physical activities and culture to enhance their social, emotional and intellectual development.

2XX is committed to exploring and developing opportunities for diversifying and updating our Program Guide for the listening audience. Targeted sponsorship in the form of a live read on a chosen program also brings attention to a specific demographic suited to your market.

We program a broad range of activities, subject matter and music for the interest and well being of all our listeners that tune-in to our programs and who utilise the facilities offered by 2XX. A number of these programs are fostered and delivered in partnership with community organisations and professionals ie: The Youth Coalition, ACTCOSS, Volunteering ACT, MIEACT, the Belconnen Community Services.

We have a number of programs that are also broadcast nationally on community radio satellite. All of this adds to the incredible networking that we can now provide to get events, details and information to our listeners.

We have a small staff who dedicate, their time to training apprentices and act as mentors to members and volunteers from all areas of the community, which improve self-confidence and social skills.

We are recognised for providing positive and constructive community support. We are constantly working towards a more inclusive society, often giving opportunities where others are not.

Survey shows listener enthusiasm for community radio

During 2012 McNair Ingenuity Research conducted the 5th Community Radio National Listener Survey. The results paint a stunning picture of the invaluable role of Community Radio in Australia and show that 2XX is strongly aligned to the needs of our local community.

In an average week across Australia around 70% of all Australians listen to radio, and 25% of those listen to Community Radio. That’s almost 90,000 Canberrans.

95% of survey respondents rated Community Radio as Highly Valuable.

Community Radio listeners are dedicated and consistent with an average listener tuning in for over 14 hours per week. People don’t just listen locally. Through the Internet our listeners tune in from anywhere and anytime.

Headline results from the survey…

1. Why People Listen to Community Radio

The number one reason Australians listen to Community Radio is for local information and local news.

Each week 2XX presents many programs and a large proportion of air time covers stories and information important and relevant to our Community on topics such as current affairs, politics, the environment, Indigenous issues, Multicultural Canberra, Health, Art, Sport, Breakfast & LunchBox (music, news, weather and community service announcements) and, of course, Music (lots of local music), plus heaps more.

2. Music, Music, Music

One third of listeners tune in for the support Community Radio gives to Australian and local musicians.

Local music is a big part of 2XX through LocalnLive (Monday to Friday 4-6pm) with the focus on local music, interviews and live to air music, plus support of touring and emerging musicians. And then there are the many specialist music programs each week focusing on various genres (Folk, Country, Electronic, Jazz, Hip Hop, Blues, the list goes on and on).

3. What listeners like

Almost one third of people tune in for the independent opinions delivered by local people.

2XX has a dedicated group of volunteer presenters who generously give their time each and every week to ensure that listeners hear quality programs. Every radio program that goes to air has much more time off-air spent in preparation and research.

4. Community Radio Listeners

The diversity of our Community shows up strongly in who listens to Community Radio – gender, age, employment, occupation and income.

2XX presents programs that support that diversity with programs for students (school and University), Multicultural Canberra (through almost 20 different ethnic language programs), Indigenous Australians, the LGBTI community, and many specialist music programs.

The National Listener Survey is conducted for the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) of which 2XXFM is a part.
