Tues 5 April 7:30pm
Electric Jellyfish reunite for a rare Australian tour this month for the launch of their 12-inch self-titled vinyl, released last year through US label Twin Lakes Records. Having toured both Australia and the USA extensively since 2007, Electric Jellyfish have been described as tapping into Australia’s “three-decade wellspring of loud, harsh post-punk blues-inversion” (Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover). Incredible psych-punk band!

Wed 6 April 7:30pm $10
The Cope Street Parade features four dynamic musicians combining a love of traditional jazz with the energy and virtuosity of the 21st century. With an enormous repertoire of jazz classics, in addition to
thrilling compositions from the performers, the Cope Street Parade can melt your heart with a tender ballad before launching into gypsy-swing guaranteed to bring dancers to their feet. Embracing influences such as Louis Armstrong, Geoff Bull, Fats Waller and Django Reinhardt, they create there own unique style of Australian swing music.

Sat 9 April 8pm $7
Melbourne’s The Bell Parade’s debut album Let’s make ‘em like that anymore blends alt-country with indie balladry and subtle psychedelia. Well-crafted lyrics teamed with nostalgic and beautifully-layered melodies. Come see ‘em play ‘em like that at The Front! PLUS – Indie folksters Julia & The Deep Sea Sirens return to The Front for the first time in 2011 with songs from their freshly released album Family Pets (currently receiving national airplay on ABC Radio) and their first new cover song in three years. Intriguing, no?

Sun 10 April 3 – 6pm
The Rhythm Project are a versatile rhythm section that plays jazz standards, originals and well known cover tunes in varying formats. This gig they will feature Leila Gato on flute. Don’t miss it!

Fri 15 April 8pm
Sydney based songstress Sam Buckingham brings her enchanting live show to The Front for an intimate night of acoustic storytelling and song. Four times finalist in the International Songwriting Competition, Buckingham has recently announced she’ll be opening for Washington in Adelaide and Perth on her upcoming national tour. Supported by Evan Buckley- Buckley’s writing is a real reflection of finding life in the cynical corners of our culture. His debut album – You’re Quite A
Forest – is best digested as a commentary to the transient nature of hope.

Sat 16 April 8pm
Michael Elisha Bones is returning to the Canberra music scene with his new, solo(ish) musical project. Performing songs born from a more melancholy muse, he will be joined by talented local folk singer/songwriter Shobana Narayanan.

Sun 17 April 7:30pm
They may be sharing the stage but when it comes to mechanical Olivetti DORAs and Hermes Baby Swiss mades, sometimes drummer for The Waifs turned tunesmith David Ross Macdonald and the lyrically erudite and captivating Heath Cullen pack their own typewriters and announce a
co-conspiratorial national road trip of sorts, the TWO WRITER TYPES TOUR.

——————————————————————–

2XX broadcast live from the Tally Room at CIT Reid during the count for the ACT Election, owing to a team assembled by Chris Warren comprising anchor Liz O’Brien, David Bromage on online updates, Tim McCann on the Molonglo electorate, Ebenezer Banful on Ginninderra and me, Michelle Dunne Breen, on Brindabella. Our live crosses to the studio every half hour from 6pm to 9:30pm were enabled by presenters Marianne Mettes (oz music show) and Kieran O’Brien presenter (Q Radio).

The team worked well together at the frantic pace of the high-energy situation: as members of the public and candidates alike stared hopefully up at the tally room board, we’d hurriedly discuss between crosses the implication of the numerical blizzard of inflowing information, elucidated by David Bromage’s and Tim McCann’s swift and incisive reading of the figures tables on the Australian Electoral Commission website (and muddied by the paper reams of preferences flows calculated and supplied by the AEC) as we’d scribble down the relevant counts to our electorates. Steve Pratt, an early casualty, was an even earlier visitor to the Tally Room, there before the sun set on the day and on his political career. Pre-poll psephologist Malcolm Mackerras was seen floating between tables, at one point asking us if we wanted to interview him, but his predictions were yesterday’s news – he was trumped by our own floating psephologist Ray Polglaze, who provided some canny insights into implications of how the count was going: for example, that Community Alliance’s Val Jeffrey might actually get up in Brindabella on preferences flows (and as it turned out, on a first-preferences-only count he would have).

Among interviewees nabbed were ultimately triumphant Meredith Hunter for the Greens, unsuccessful Independent Mark Parton and outgoing MLA Bill Stefaniak.

We all felt the outside broadcast from the Tally Room went really well and that 2XX is well set up to stand beside the mainstream media in situations like this. 2XX was in fact the first media outlet to call the result of 7 Labor, 6 Liberals and 4 Greens – Liz O’Brien saw it way before any of the other media outlets, the result only becoming known many days later. Up until then, it was believed that Labor and the Liberals would be even on 7, with the Greens getting 3 seats).
