On AirOn Air

AMRAP – the Australian Music Airplay Project is a community radio initiative that works with musicians and community broadcasters to get great Australian music national airplay, faster which distributes ‘radio ready’ promo copies of new releases by Australian signed and independent artists to community radio stations nationwide.

Amrap offers services for signed and unsigned Australian artists, major and independent record labels and all community radio stations around Australia and is instrumental in getting new Australian music getting to radio!

The service is targeted and cost effective, removing some of the guesswork for artists and record labels. Artists using the ‘Mail Out’ receive information about every community station that received their release, allowing the artist to follow up and build direct relationships with stations.

Amrap is funded by the Department of Broadband,Communication and Digital Economy through the Community Broadcasting Foundation and is managed by the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia.

The Sovereign Voices Show is one the longest running programs on 2xx Community Radio. Gary Gorden together with the support of Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Services 63 Boolimba Crescent Narrabundah (02) 6284 6222 consolidated the show (on the shoulders of those who came before). Then in 2006 and after many years broadcasting the show Liz McNiven decided it was time for some new blood. The then AIATSIS trainees Michael Weir and Adam Shipp otherwise known as Hip Hop act Gee Wizz &BattleShipp were trained and prepped to take over the reigns and keep the tradition alive. The two locally raised Wiradjuri lads were very focused on introducing the show to a new audience. Unfortunately due to work and study commitments Battle was forced out of presenting the show but still involved himself behind the scenes. Michael was joined by well known community member Richie Allan. Richie is a Kamilaroi man and the two have a great relationship that shines through on Sovereign Voices.

Other voices heard on the program belong to Samara Gentle and Malcolm Towney. Samara added a female voice to the crew providing the weather details and is just as cheeky as the boys. Malcolm who is often referred to as uncle is the go to man for all the community events. He knows every Koori in the Capital and is well known character. And of-course many people come in to be a part of the show.  Throughout the show the two were heard making light hearted jokes about one another creating a relaxed environment for their audience. This informal approach provided a relaxed easy going atmospherewhere the listeners and community were comfortable. Richie and Michael’s reputation and community involvement has proved to be critical in developing the show and building a greater following. They introduced new ways of communicating with there audience taken advantage of online streaming, popular social networking websites, and the Indigenous Network to reach the wider community.

The Sovereign Voices content includes local and national Indigenous news from an Indigenous perspective, local events and sporting updates,a broad range of musical genres performed by Indigenous artists,as well as topical discussions of particular interest to the Indigenous community. Sovereign Voices has had many interviews and live performances with both local and national artists including Monwell Levi,Carts 2Deadly,Banawurun,Emma Donovan and Archie Roach.

The Sovereign Voices crew is dedicated to the continuation and development of the show and recently attended the CBAA conference representing 2xx fm,to gain more knowledge and skill on reaching more listeners and keeping those they already have and are enthusiastic on the development of a CD of local Indigenous artist and are developing a project that will result in a local Indigenous music compilation as well as a community event to promote the CD.
