2XX beats with a feminist heart and the station has been a vibrant space for women to produce and broadcast, as well as a space for feminists to gather and organise.

Splash Out, hosted by 2XX Women in Radio, was an unforgettable expression of that organisation and empowerment. And in 2026, it is impossible to celebrate 50 years of broadcasting in Canberra without taking a deep dive into Splash Out (pardon the pun).Running from 1994 to 1999, Splash Out was a celebration of solidarity and optimism for women and girls in Canberra, marking International Women’s Day.

Held at the Civic Pool, Splash Out was a full day packed with activities, including the legendary Bread and Roses Relay Races, line dancing, aqua aerobics, croquet, belly dancing and the Knat Gnat Circus. A storytelling tent offered a break from the hectic schedule and an Information Fair brought together industrial, educational, social, health, advocacy and welfare services in the ACT, with stalls staffed by women.

2XX Women in Radio broadcast live poolside, providing a wonderful opportunity for women to get critical experience and hone their skills in outdoor broadcasting. Lunchtime and evening gigs were popular highlights and artists included Paige Gordon and Performance Group, a Canberra based innovative dance theatre group, performing alongside bands such as Tinderbox, Machitun, Roseanne’s Daughters and Mereana OTene Waaka.

Over the six years, Splash Out was supported by the Cultural Council of the ACT government, the Heart Foundation, Health Pact, the Women’s Centre for Health Matters and others with body positive themes that included ‘My Size. My Shape. I Feel Good. I Feel Great!’

The iconic Splash Out posters created each year to promote the event, designed by the likes of internationally recognised photo-artist Tina FiveAsh, continue to adorn the backs of doors in houses across Canberra. Splash Out was a wonderful event for 2XX and for Canberra and one that holds great memories for everyone involved.
